Students who will be entering 7th grade next year (Class of 2023) and students who will be entering 12th grade next year (Class of 2018) need to ensure student immunizations are up-to-date including some new Iowa requirements listed below on meningitis.
You can receive immunization updates through a medical provider or by scheduling an appointment with Floyd County Public Health (641) 257-6111. The change in law was approved by the Iowa Legislature in 2016 and the Iowa Department of Public Health is ramping up its fight against meningitis, a deadly disease that targets teens and young adults.
Iowa law states
For the 2017-2018 school year, and all future school years, all students entering, advancing or transferring into 7th grade and born after September 15, 2004, will need proof of one dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY). All students entering, advancing, or transferring into 12th grade and born after September 15, 1999, will need proof of two doses of meningococcal (A, C W, Y) vaccine (1 dose received on or after 16 years of age); or 1 dose if received when the student was 16 years of age or older.
For the 2013-2014 school year, and all future school years, all students entering, advancing or transferring into 7th grade and born on or after September 15, 2000, will need proof of an adolescent tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough) booster immunization (called “Tdap”) for school in the fall.
All students entering 7th grade will need one meningococcal vaccination and a Tdap vaccination and provide proof to the school
ALL students entering 12th grade will need proof of 2 doses of meningococcal vaccine or 1 dose if received student received after they were 16 years of age.
