The present
concession/restroom building was constructed in the 1960's, about
the time that our high school was built. The facility has
served the needs of our Comet volunteers and fans for nearly fifty
years. But we have reached the point where the structure must
be replaced. We, as A Community of
Comets, have decided
to "Build for the
Future".
Why do we need to do something with our current concession/restroom facility? Our Comet Booster Club has identified several very important concerns that must be addressed:
- The concession stand needs to be safer, more efficient and profitable
- Its size is too small to accommodate needed volunteers and equipment
- Handicapped accessible restrooms with adequate restroom facilities for women are needed
- Improve access and visibility to make the new facility more fan and athlete friendly
- Provide a meeting room for our Comet teams before and during halftime of games and meets
Presently, one hundred percent of the booster club's profit is designated to help fund Comet athletics. The Booster Club is constantly striving to improve our athletic facilities and equipment. In the past we have helped fund the new press box at Comet Field and provided $30,000 for the weight room at the high school. Booster Club profits also finance over one-third of the cost of all athletic equipment purchased throughout any given year for boys' and girls' middle school and high school athletics.
The concession stand is open for nearly thirty different school and public events each year, including: 5th and 6th grade Youth Sports Foundation football; 7th through 10th grade football; Junior Varsity and Varsity football; middle school, high school and state sponsored track meets; and the annual Relay for Life. A larger redesigned facility will allow us to expand our menu and provide space for today's food handling equipment. It will also maximize our volunteers' time and enhance the booster club's profit margin.
As most of you know, the current facility is located too close to the exit/entrance ramp to the grandstands. Overcrowding occurs when fans congregate near the ramp. This restricts access to the present facility, as well as causing some safety issues. To address that concern, the new building will be moved further away from the field fence line. Handicapped accessible restrooms and an expanded women's restroom will also make the proposed structure more fan friendly.
Currently our teams must meet on the field or return to the locker room at the high school before and at halftime of football games and track meets. The new meeting room for our Comet teams will enable our players and coaches to more efficiently utilize this time. Athletes will have additional time to rest, and the coaching staff can more effectively work with the players prior to returning to the game/meet.
The Booster Club's plan is to demolish the present building and construct the new multipurpose athletic facility on that site. Our goal is to begin demolition after the last track meet in May 2008 and have the new structure completed and ready for use by mid August 2008. After intensive research and soliciting advice from fans and volunteers, our committee has agreed upon the proposed building design shown below. This design addresses the identified needs.
A Community of Comets "Building for the Future" committee is proposing to construct a new 2800 square foot multipurpose facility which will include a concession stand, handicapped accessible restrooms, and a Comet team meeting room. The location will provide additional space for fan traffic flow.

Our capital campaign committee has established a minimum campaign goal of $350,000. This is the estimated cost of demolition of the current structure and construction of the new multipurpose facility. This campaign will NOT increase property taxes. Our goal is to raise all of the money privately.
We are pleased to announce that the Charles City School system has committed the first $60,000 to our project, and the Comet Booster Club has pledged $32,000. With everyone working together we can be A Community of Comets "Building for the Future", making our project a reality.
- Thoughtful Giving:
All contributions to the capital campaign will be gratefully accepted. Gifts may include cash, appreciated securities, grain, gifts-in-kind, real estate, and pledges to be paid as donors direct. Gifts to the capital campaign for A Community of Comets "Building for the Future" may be made in the form of a pledge to be paid over a period of three years. - Legacy Gifts:
The capital campaign committee has identified several naming opportunities. These enable donors to use the multipurpose facility to establish a lasting memorial to their family, a deceased relative, an admired individual, a business or an organization. Inserted in our brochure is a list of the naming opportunities. Families may combine their pledges for a Family Legacy Gift. All Naming Opportunities are on a first come, first serve basis.
Note: The dollar value of a recognition is not related to its actual cost, but is relative to its value as a recognition opportunity. - Giving Categories:
All contributions will be recognized in a permanent display at the multipurpose athletic facility. The following gift categories will be utilized to recognize all donors.- Platinum Club..........................................$50,000 or more
