Return to Learn

A safe and effective reopening of Charles City Community Schools in the fall requires the commitment of all Charles City Community Schools family members- staff, students, families, and community- to do their part.  At our core, we are about educating students and creating compassionate, competent problem solvers. The Charles City Community Schools submitted the required State of Iowa Return-to-Learn Assurances before July 1, 2020.  We are currently gathering feedback from Charles City Community Schools staff around the Return to Learn Plan and will share it next week with the community prior to the July 20, 2020 Board of Education Return to Learn Plan presentation.

As Charles City Community Schools moves forward with plans to open August 25, 2020, we are developing a Return to Learn plan that is flexible and can adjust to the rapidly changing public health situation.  The Return-to-Learn plan covers the health and safety concerns of on-campus learning, as well as sets expectations for required remote learning if campus buildings are closed.  We are also developing a modified remote learning plan for those families who may want their students to learn remotely, due to student/family health concerns or personal choice, even when the district as a whole is engaged in on-campus learning.

Action Steps

As a school family, we would like to extend our gratitude and heartfelt thanks for the outpouring of support our school family has received over the past week regarding bigoted comments made at an away baseball game. We know you trust us to keep you informed and we want to let you know what steps we are currently taking.

  • Representatives from the Charles City Senior Leadership team are meeting with the leadership of the other school district next week.
  • The Executive Director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union will be meeting with Charles City Senior Leaders to use this situation as a catalyst for statewide change.
  • We are working with the NEIC conference to develop systems to counteract systemic bigotry and improve sportsmanship.
  • Charles City Community Schools specifically lists equity as a strategic goal of the Charles City Community Schools. We will continue to live our mission of regardless of who you are or what your story is, you can learn and be loved in Charles City Community Schools.

Graduation

Class of 2020 Commencement will be held this Sunday, July 12 at the Charles City High School Comet Field starting at 5:30 P.M. In the event that poor weather conditions exist or are predicted to occur, the 2020 Commencement ceremony will be postponed to Tuesday, July 14, 2020.  All graduates need to meet near the football field scoreboard at 5:00 P.M. wearing their cap and gown. Please see this link for details and to complete your RSVP.

Student Chromebooks

Families that missed the original student Chromebook roll-in at the beginning of June are asked to now please return their Chromebooks to the respective school buildings.   The only exception is if you had indicated that you were in an online course over the summer or you have worked with school employees to keep yours to continue with credit recovery work.

There are phone numbers listed on the doors of each school to get someone in the building to hand it to.  Make sure to return the case, with Chromebook and charger inside or you will have a charge added to your registration fee for the missing items.
