Status Update

Wednesday, November 18, 2020

Thank you for your continued support of our students and the Charles City Community School family. We want to keep you informed as we continue through this unprecedented school year.

We continue to follow the board-approved COVID decision-making matrix to determine if we educate students in-person, hybrid, or virtual. Right now, even though Floyd County has a positivity rate more than 22%, our school absenteeism rate is around 5.6%. This means we have space to continue in the current model right now. However, if our teachers continue to get sick or our remaining food service staff become ill or quarantined, we may have to transition quickly to a virtual model.

In addition to their regular lessons, students are learning how to get online and learn from home. Ask your student to see inside their learning platform (SeeSaw at Washington Elementary School, Google Classroom at other campuses). We are preparing students to go virtual in the event conditions in the county don't improve. We have applied and are approved by the Iowa Department of Education to go into virtual learning if we need to make a shift. This is a proactive step, and we will keep you informed if we plan to exercise this option.

There are a few changes to activities with new proclamations signed by the Governor Monday.

  • All middle school and all club sports events are currently canceled until December 10.
  • All spectators at high school events over two years old must wear masks and maintain 6 feet distance from other spectators
  • Only two spectators are permitted for each student-athlete.
  • Athletes can be closer than six feet and are not required to wear masks.
